I would love to see Skype fail.
It’s a product introduced by a company that was screwed. It has a five second name that every other business in the world didn’t use because it sounds like crap.
Sharman Networks was formed when they purchased the file-sharing program, “KaZaA”, from its previous European owner. When they realized they were screwed after trying to milk KaZaA for every last buck it had, (which caused them to lose a giant chunk of marketshare and all respect) the company, after thumbing through a few options and realizing that they did not specialize in anything, choose the Instant Messenger route… later to add a distributed Telephoney-like system. Essentially, it’s the same as the product they already offered, KaZaA, yet repackaged in a different form. The name “Skype” is like a 5 second thing. Imagine them sitting around a table… “sssss—kkkkkkk——ype?” …Most find it pathetic that they couldn’t come up with anything better.
Because of the closed-minded approach of the company, this is one of those products that I can’t believe has made it this far. Sharman Networks lacks any form of innovation… all they’ve done is duct tape a few ideas together and screwed around. Either way, they’ve been extremely lucky with how things have gone with this product… it’s almost ridiculous.
What’s a shame is that, at this point, Skype isn’t going anywhere because they’ve had enough time to fix their mistakes and gain another significant following. Nobody else can compete at this point… except, perhaps, Yahoo.
