“Gift card” credit cards at risk for socially-engineered takeover via phishing. 💳

So, companies like Visa and American Express sell these gift cards that work like regular credit cards… but they're tied to nobody in particular.

So, what's the problem? …Well, all someone needs apparently is the card's number and security code to issue a replacement and shut the original off, and there's nothing you can do about it! 🤬

The procedure to retrieve a “lost or stolen” card is simply that anyone can call their customer service line, give them the card number, security code, and a mailing-address, and then they'll just send out a new card with an entirely new card number. — The old card and number will no longer work, and the money is transferred to the new card… which is sent to whoever called it in, not you. And, there's no reversal procedure available since neither that card nor the original are tied to anybody in particular!

… Just thought I'd bring this up. 🤦🏼‍
